Twenty-four-hour pH Monitoring of the Distal Esophagus:A Quantitative Measure of Gastroesophageal Reflux
Lawrence F. Johnson, LT COL, MC, USA, F.A.C.G. Twenty-four hour pH monitoring of the distal esophagus (24‐hour pH) quantitates gastroesophageal reflux in a near-physiologic setting by measuring the frequency and duration of acid exposure to the esophageal mucosa. The technic enjoys good patient acceptance and employs pH equipment readily available in gastroenterology diagnostic laboratories. The test distinguishes asymptomatic volunteer subjects from patients with symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux by six components of the 24-hour pH record and a derived composite score.
